Amarillo by Morning and American Girls

It has been nearly 10 days since my last update on here. That feels like it is too long. Of course I was out of town for most of those 10 days.

The Momma and I left on Sunday the 18th for our second mystery/mission trip with our youth from FUMC Quitman. Since April we had been giving clues to the youth about where we were headed for this trip. It made for some interesting times as they would read the clue on the announcements on a Wednesday night and then try to figure out what the heck it meant. I can say that we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, knowing where we were going and what the clues actually meant while the youth tried to figure it out. We didn't even tell The Wild Things for fear the youth would try and bribe/flatter/torture it out of one of them.

We went to Amarillo and we worked for City Church there, which is the downtown, inner-city, urban outreach. For four days we had 17 youth helping to prepare hot meals as well as helping with vacation Bible school in the West Texas heat. As as quick aside, it was in the low 90's all week and there was no noticeable humidity, so compared to East Texas it was barely heat at all. It was a great experience for all of the youth who went as well as for the adults. I am thankful for the opportunity that we had to do this.

During this time, The Wild Things got to stay with Gran'Maw and Daddy Bill for the week. They had a great time there as they always do. They swam and played and watched TV and pretty much all around seemed to forget that Momma and Daddy were away. They saw Uncles Brock and Caleb and Aunt Ashley and had a tickle fight (which when I was first told this by Boo misheard it and thought she said they had a sticker fight, which would be no where near as enjoyable as a tickle fight). Then on Saturday the real adventure began.

We met the Wild Things in Frisco in order to go to that magical place where little girls act like, well, little girls. We went to The American Girl Store. Wow is really about all I can say about it. We went because Boo and Puck had each gotten American Girls for Christmas, and Boo had discovered that she could get her girl's ears pierced at the store for a mere $14, which she happened to have from her birthday and other random reasons. Now let me stop here for a moment and say this: When I first got my ear pierced, I believe it cost me about $5 to do it. I'm a REAL human. It cost a DOLL more to get her ears pierced than it cost me the first time. Also, Mom was far unhappier about it being me than she was about it being a doll for some reason.

In this "magical" store there was everything a little girl could want concerning American Girls. There were new clothes and new friends. There were pets and there were accessories such as crutches, casts and wheel chairs. There was ear piercing and even a salon where you could have their hair done. That's right, for $20 you could have your doll's hair done in the Fashion of the Month, or you could pick any other fashion for a mere $15. Either way it is more than I pay to do anything to my own hair. Momma and I talked about this and how hard it was for us to see and participate in this rampant excess when we had just returned home from a week of serving kids who for the most part live in poverty.

It was worth it though for two reasons: 1) To see the way that my beautiful girls' faces lit up when we walked through those doors, and 2) to watch Brother ride the escalator up and down which for him (and me as well) was the highlight of the whole excursion.

Over all it has been a good 10 days. I honestly have no complaints.

Grace, Peace and Love y'all.
